Turning 1 · turning oneThe wrapping paper, mostly. This birthday is really for the parents — the baby wants things to stack, post, bang and chew.›Ages 2–3 · the toddler yearsCopying grown-ups (play kitchens, toy tools), Duplo, diggers, dinosaurs, and whoever's on CBeebies — Bluey and Hey Duggee are gods here.›Ages 4–5 · little kidsPretending to be things: superheroes, vets, princesses, builders. A Yoto or Tonies audio player is the current parent-approved insider hit — stories without a screen. Scooters are playground status.›Ages 6–7 · the golden agePlayground currency. Right now that's Pokémon cards, LEGO proper (not Duplo — they're insulted), slime and squishies, Dog Man and Beast Quest books, football kits. Whatever's being swapped at the school gate wins.›Ages 8–9 · big kidsGetting good at things — football skills, Rubik's cubes, drawing, gaming. Nintendo is usually the console of this age; Nerf battles are at their peak. Diary of a Wimpy Kid territory.›Ages 10–12 · the tween yearsTheir online worlds: Roblox and Minecraft above all — a Robux gift card is genuinely the most-wanted gift at this age, however it makes adults feel. Otherwise: proper stationery, series fiction (Percy Jackson), sports kit for their actual team.›Ages 13–15 · teenagersHonestly? Money, and the dignity of choosing themselves. Beyond that: hoodies, earbuds, skincare (yes, really — it's a whole thing), gig or match tickets, food-based treats. A voucher for where they actually shop beats a present.›Ages 16–17 · nearly grownExperiences and independence: driving lessons, festival or gig tickets, cash toward the big thing they're saving for, proper (small) adult luxuries.›
